Clark Huesemann is assisting Pittsburg State University in planning for the future of the 87,000 sf Axe Library through the creation of a Library Master Plan. Clark Huesemann created a process that is enabling University leaders and Library professionals to visualize functional, creative and powerful ideas for the facility.
An analysis of the current facility and it’s planned evolution included facilitated discussions regarding collection size, organization and access, weeding, and off-site storage as considerations in planning for increased space for study, computer use, collaboration, and meeting spaces.
Three distinct alternative futures were generated to compare the location of functional aspects of the library relative to conceptual differences in how the library might be organized. The library as academic connector, the library as a work shop, and the library as a study hub were all developed to facilitate a discussion about how the library will be perceived in the future, and what architectural solutions can be developed to support that new brand.
The master plan addresses how the library functions regarding the approach to collections, circulation, tech services, service points, and ideas for space for research, emerging technologies, group work and collaboration.
Ideas for the entry experience and the branding of the library as a center to campus activities were included. Conversations with stakeholders included a broad range of alternative ways to evolve the Library over the next 10 years in concept diagrams, plans, narrative, and photographs.
