Washburn University Art Building

The new home of the Art Department at Washburn University provides a contemporary light-filled environment for the study and creation of art. The building was designed to complement the existing campus of traditional limestone, but also establish its own identity.

Controlled natural light spills into the main corridor space, as well as, the studio spaces; An outdoor sculpture yard is connected to the ceramics and sculpture studios inside the building; And large limestone blocks harvested from the cast-offs of a local quarry form the edge of the outdoor space.

Gallery spaces for the display of student and faculty artwork are provided with flexible hanging systems and lighting, and durable interior finishes provide a consistent neutral backdrop for the artwork.

Studio and support spaces for printmaking, photography, digital and graphic arts, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and design were included in addition to the department suite, faculty offices, and critique spaces.
